Ethernet over IP (Proprietary - not planned yet)

EoIP is a MikroTik-proprietary tunnelling protocol that encapsulates Ethernet frames directly inside IP (protocol 47, same as GRE).

It is designed to be:

  • Simple
  • Easy to deploy
  • Deeply integrated with RouterOS bridging

Unfortunately, EoIP is proprietary (MikroTik ↔ MikroTik only). It operates a little like GRE in terms of encapsulation. There is a 'Tunnel ID' used to identify a layer-2 circuit, which is then bound to a bridge to extend this layer-2 domain. There is no native encryption, however, so it is typically used with IPSec or WireGuard. So it's unlikely we will deploy this since L2TPv3 is the open standard and is more widely supported for the community.
