How does it work?

The torus is nekotopia's private network layer. It's a mesh of WireGuard tunnels connecting members through our AWS infrastructure. Traffic between members is encrypted end-to-end; we route it, but we can't read it.

When you join, you get a private IP address on the torus. Other members can reach your services at that address. You can reach theirs. The public internet never sees any of it.

Edge Routers

The easiest way to connect is with a dedicated edge router - a small, cheap device that sits between your existing internet connection and whatever you want to share.

We recommend MikroTik devices running RouterOS v7. A hEX costs about $60 and handles everything: WireGuard tunnel, firewall, NAT, routing. Configure it once and forget about it.

You can also run the WireGuard client directly on your server, laptop, or phone. The edge router approach just makes it easier to connect things that can't run modern software - like that SPARCstation in your closet.

Account Types

Private accounts get an IP in our internal range. Your services are reachable by other Torus members. Good for sharing with friends, running private services, and keeping things simple.

Public accounts get a dedicated public IP address, 1:1 mapped to your Torus address, from our Public IPv4 pool. Your services are reachable from the open internet and from the Torus. Good for hosting things you want the world to see, while still benefiting from the Torus for private access and management.
